Introduction
Created to celebrate 300 years since the birth of James Hutton, the father of modern geology, this limited-edition release is our final Workshop Series whisky. It’s a tribute to one of Scotland’s greatest thinkers and to an idea that perfectly reflects how great whisky is made: that remarkable things happen slowly.
While Hutton travelled throughout Scotland, many of the ideas that transformed science were developed through his close relationship with the Scottish Borders. His family farm, experiments in agriculture and observations of the local landscape all played a crucial role in forming the theories that continue to influence geology today.
For us at The Borders Distillery, Hutton’s story feels particularly close to home. Like whisky, his discoveries remind us that the best things cannot be rushed.

what is the concept of deep time?
Before James Hutton, many believed the Earth was only a few thousand years old.
After years studying the landscapes of Scotland, particularly around the Scottish Borders, Hutton reached a revolutionary conclusion.
The Earth was far older than anyone had imagined.
Mountains weren’t created overnight. Neither were valleys, rivers or coastlines. They were shaped gradually over millions of years by water, weather and pressure.
Today we know this as Deep Time – the immense timescale over which our planet changes.
It’s a concept that transformed geology forever.
But it also resonates with anyone who understands whisky.
why we created ws:04 deep time
The Workshop Series has always been about curiosity.
Each release explores a different idea, challenging expectations of what Scotch whisky can be.
For our fourth – and final – release, we wanted to tell a story literally rooted in the Borders.
James Hutton’s legacy offered the perfect inspiration.
Created in collaboration with the James Hutton Institute, WS:04 Deep Time celebrates curiosity, craftsmanship and the belief that the finest results come with patience.

WS:04 Deep Time is a Blended Scotch Whisky made from:
- 63.8% Single Malt
- 36.2% Single Grain
- 40% ABV
- Matured exclusively in first-fill bourbon barrels
- Natural colour
- Limited to 750 bottles
the final chapter of the workshop series
WS:04 Deep Time marks the conclusion of our Workshop Series.
Each previous release explored innovation, experimentation and the creative freedom that exists within Scotch whisky.
Borders Malt & Rye was released as our first experimental blended Scotch whisky back in 2022.
The Long & Short of it experimented with very long and very short fermentation times.
Then Right As Rain which explored the influence of cask type on our whisky.
Now, Deep Time brings those ideas together in one final release.
It’s a whisky inspired by the Borders, made in the Borders and created to celebrate one of the region’s greatest minds.
Only 750 bottles have been produced, making it our rarest Workshop Series release to date.
