Boldly blended by the Borders

Scotch whiskies created in the spirit of curiosity and innovation, entirely by us in the Borders. Each release is a bold exploration of flavour, crafted by combining casks and unique distillates. These blends are not about following tradition, but about pushing its boundaries – offering you the chance to experience whisky in a new light. Whether it’s a surprising twist of sweetness, a layer of spice, or a finish that lingers in unexpected ways, every bottle is an invitation to taste something rare, different, and always boldly blended by the borders.

EXPLORE OUR RANGE OF BORDERS SPIRITS

New Make Spirit

Made from Scottish Borders barley – every grain grown within 35 miles of the distillery, our New Make Spirit is the building block of everything we do. This spirit is what we distill in-house every day, running straight from the stills and into our casks. It will one day transform into our own Single Malt – the first to leave the Scottish Borders since 1837. We keep some behind to bottle on site, so you can enjoy our award-winning New Make at home.

Serve me with

  • 25ml of New Make Spirit
  • Soda Water
  • Ice
  • Garnish with slices of juicy apple

Borders Malt & Rye

In 2019, we distilled a small batch of rye spirit and matured it in the same fresh-fill bourbon casks as the malt, to create this remarkable and aromatic whisky. This is the first Blended Scotch Whisky to leave the Scottish Borders in 185 years, and the first expression of the Workshop Series from the Borders Distillery.

Serve me with

  • 50ml of Borders Malt & Rye
  • 1 part Lemonade
  • 1 part Ginger Beer
  • Garnish with fresh mint leaves

The Long & Short of it

For the second release in the series, our distillers played with time in the Wash House to produce something we’re really excited about. The result; a blend that gives you short bursts of flavour, and long moments to savour. The Long & Short of it is about enjoying your whisky, your way – be that long or short!

Serve me with

  • 50ml Long & Short
  • 25ml lemon juice
  • 10ml syrup
  • Soda
  • Ice
  • Lemon twist to garnish

RIGHT AS RAIN

The latest release in the series, Right As Rain brings together single grain rye whisky matured in Cognac casks with single malts aged in red wine and first-fill bourbon.

Entirely made by us in the Scottish Borders – where the weather never bothers us too much.

Serve me with

  • 50ml Right As Rain
  • 25ml Peach syrup

Workshop Series

Workshop Series faqs

What is the workshop series?

The Workshop Series is a collection of experimental blended Scotch whiskies created by our distillers in the Scottish Borders. Each release explores a different idea, process, or flavour profile, offering a fresh perspective on what Scotch whisky can be.

Which workshop series whisky should I choose?

Choose Borders Malt & Rye if you enjoy gentle spice, pastry notes, and a classic whisky profile with a twist.

Choose The Long & Short Of It if you’re interested in the influence of fermentation and enjoy a balance of rich and fruity flavours.

Choose Right As Rain if you love sweeter fruit notes, creamy texture, and the influence of Cognac and wine casks.

When was the borders distillery founded?

We were founded in 2013 by a group of friends, all veterans of the Scotch whisky industry, who saw something missing – no distillery in the Borders.

In 2018, spirit flowed again for the first time in the region since 1837.

What is the borders growers and distillers program?

It’s how we keep things local and circular.

We work directly with 10 local farms and Simpsons Malt to grow our barley, and in return, by-products from distilling go back to those farms to generate energy and nutrients. It’s about quality, sustainability, and backing our community at every step.

Why is it called the workshop series?

Our distillery is built on curiosity and innovation. The Workshop Series gives our distillers the freedom to experiment with different casks, fermentation styles, grains, and blending techniques.

As we like to say: Some say there’s nothing new in Scotch whisky. We say think again.

Can I drink these whiskies in cocktails?

Absolutely. Whisky should be enjoyed your way.

While each expression is fantastic neat, we’ve also created simple serves and cocktails that highlight the unique flavours of every release.

can i own a cask of borders whisky?

We offer a private cask programme that allows you to own a cask from The Borders Distillery. It’s a unique opportunity to be part of the modern history of Scotch whisky in the Scottish Borders.
